Award for the Painting "Hope" (2020) by Mirjana Avramović

The Painting "Hope", oil on Canvas, 38 x 51 cm, 2020, won the third prize at the competition Art Prize Laatzen 2020 ("Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung", November 17th, 2020).

The Art Prize Laatzen is awarded annually by the Kunstkreis Laatzen e.V. (Art Circle Laatzen) in the region of Hanover, Lower Saxony. The group exhibition of the artworks for the competition took place between October 24th and November 13th 2020 in the Leine-Center Laatzen.

From the press release for the awards ceremony on November 13th, 2020 (HAZ - "Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung", November 17th, 2020, by Daniel Junker): "The Artist shows us an architecturally well-planned composition, in which all the landscape elements seem to have their fixed place", Jury member Volker Brose praised the realisation. "She skilfully plays with light and shadow and gives the painting a considerable depth."

Excerpt from the Jury member Volker Brose´s speech:
In the artist's composition, all the landscape elements seem to "follow a functional and zeitgeist-aesthetic plan..." “The dominant pair of figures, silhouetted in the light foreground, contrast with this design. How does an elderly lady with a dog fit into such an urban landscape? Where is she going? What´s she up to?”

The artist "pushes the viewer to reflect, to deal with the relationship between man and city. And it thus gives the painting a richness of content." She "finds a harmonious balance between realistic, almost graphic, illustration and action-oriented abstraction."

Serbian Daily Newspaper "Vesti" > Second Solo Exhibition of the painter Mirjana Avramović in Region Hanover

The Serbian daily newspaper "Vesti" reports on Mirjana Avramovic’s second solo exhibition at Kunstkreis Laatzen in the printed edition and the online edition of 22nd March 2019.

‘Vesti’ recalls that this is the artist’s second independent exhibition in Hanover and stresses that a total of four cycles of paintings from four years will be on display.
Referring to a series of pictures dedicated to biblical themes, the paper writes: “A central place in this cycle was the painting of the ‘Annunciation’, which was exhibited in Germany last year: in the final of a competition for modern Bible illustrations. The pictures from this cycle radiate a mildness reminiscent of orthodox icons.” According to ‘Vesti’, the painting ‘Awakening’ attracted the greatest interest among the visitors. The newspaper also reports on their praise for the entire exhibition. In addition the article also contains an artistic curriculum vitae of Mirjana Avramovic.

The daily “Vesti” is the largest diaspora newspaper in the Serbian language. The printed edition amounts to more than 70,000 copies, in addition there is an online edition.

The renowned Serbian daily newspaper "Danas" reports in detail about the solo exhibition of the artist Mirjana Avramović in Hanover in the online edition of 12nd March, 2019 as well as in the print edition of 13th March, 2019 (section "Culture").

Review of the exhibition by the Belgrade newspaper “Danas” (13.03.2019)("Garden of Memories, Garden of Knowledge", 3rd March-22nd April 2019)

The high-profile daily „Danas“ highlights in a detailed review the thematic diversity and at the same time the presence of a plausible red thread in Avramovic’s exhibition: a meta-narrative that runs through the different cycles. The article emphasises the artist’s ability to interweave different levels of existence and modes of reflection.

Thus, in relation to the artist’s earliest cycle, which deals with the themes of motherhood and early childhood experience, the reviewer stresses the “presence of symbols of nature and sculptures of Vinča culture.” These “intend that behind a self-confident realism of the foreground there are reflections that lead from the personal to the general.” The paper also recognises such cross-links in relation to the cycle “The Invasion of Myths”: “In greenery, in the woods and in a labyrinth with deceptive perspectives, the symbolism of Wagner’s musical dramas is purveyed by age-old mythological notions of the feminine.” The magazine also finds echoes of Richard Wagner in the series “Gardens of Memories, Gardens of Knowledge”: The “climbing plants aspiring to the sun” are reminiscent of “the ones from the Wesendonck song Im Treibhaus by Richard Wagner.”

The reviewer of the newspaper “Danas” sees the painting “Awakening” as the highlight of the exhibition: This is where the narratives of the artist’s earlier cycles come together: “it is a mysterious entrance into a new world of ideas, an initiation.”

Solo Exhibition "Gardens of Memories, Gardens of Knowledge", Oil Paintings by Mirjana Avramovic: 3rd March-2nd April 2019

From an introductory interpretation of the exhibiton: Mirjana Avramovic´solo exhibiton at Kunstkreis Laatzen (The Art Circle Laatzen) represents a cross-section of her work up to this moment and comprises several cycles. In the earliest cycle of 2015 "Roots and Fruits" motifs from the artist´s childhood and early period of motherhood appear. The second cycle "The Invasion of Myths" (2016/17), is dealing with a seemingly completely different world, in which the main Germanic deities appear as transposed super-parents and we stroll through garden landscapes with warlike Valkyries. A separate cycle is dedicated to biblical themes (2017/18), including "Annunciation", which was one of the 12 best Works in the 2018 "Herimman Prize" competition. It is full of Eastern Christian mysticism of light.

In the cycles "Gardens of Memories, Gardens of Knowledge" (2018/2019) a synthesis of the themes previously dealt with takes place: In symbolic garden worlds, figures from these different levels meet each other and form a dynamic panopticon of the artist´s inner and outer world. In the paintings of this cycle, we see the spaces of childhood memories and inner spaces of knowledge translated into symbolic dreamscapes.

A detailed interpretation of the paintings from different cycles at the exhibition can be read in German in the flyers above.

The Association of Cities and Communities of the Federal State of Hesse
and the Cultural Foundation of Hessen-Thüringen
Helmarshausen (Bad Karlshafen)

Participation in the Group exhibiton of finalists of the Herimann Award Competition for contemporary Bible illustration

Opening of the Exhibition and the Awards Presentation: June 29th 2018 at 11:00 a.m.

The Association of Cities and Communities of the Federal State of Hesse and the Cultural Foundation of Hessen-Thüringen remind of the great cultural heritage of Helmarshausen (city Bad Karlshafen). The Herimann Prize is an award for contemporary Bible illustrations. The award is named after the famous monk Herimann, who created the magnificent "Gospel Book of Henry the Lion" in the abbey Helmwardeshusen (Helmarshausen) around 1188. In the monastery art workshop, which was highly regarded throughout Europe, manuscript illuminations and goldsmithing were made in the Middle Ages.

From an article in the Belgrade newspaper “Danas” (14.08.2018):

«The encounter with this powerful and meaningful waterfall of light and colours awakens the viewer from the bourgeois dream of emptiness and leads him into mental and emotional landscapes, landscapes of warm, flowing and authentic faith. This painting, of original and strong artistic expression, at first glance (...) stylistically reminiscent of the intense colours of medieval painting, the fantasies of Odilon Redon and the visions of Emil Nolde, combines representations of holiness, mystical maternal tenderness, heavenly warmth and love. The Archangel Gabriel touches the bearer of God, who has placed the white lily, the traditional symbol of this scene, beside her and lowered her head in humility, while the rain of spiritual gold hovered around her. The whole world has gathered around Our Lady: the ancient elements, water, fire, earth and air in the harmonious moment of the Holy Annunciation.»

„A Remarkable Synthesis of Science and Art“:
Serbian Newspaper Praises Paintress Mirjana Avramović („Vesti“, 1st/2nd April 2017)

In the weekend edition of the Serbian daily newspaper „Vesti“ on April 1st and 2nd, a detailed article about Mirjana Avramovic was published.

The journalist Ranko Lukic praised the painter as a rare, if not unique person in whom an extraordinary synthesis of science and art has come about.

Alongside a biographical overview, Lukic noted that Mirjana Avramovic´s paintings had been selected by Franz Steiner Verlag, Stuttgart, as a cover illustration for one of the publisher´s new publications.

The article also considers Mirjana Avramovic´s work in more detail. Referring to the series “Invasion of Myths”, the newspaper reports that Avramovic addresses the mythological and cultural connections in the geographical area of Europe through the depiction of various deities, which are repeated in different forms: from the Vinca culture of the Balkans to the pre-Christian deities on European soil.

In this context, the newspaper emphasizes that the painter also found her inspiration for the myth cycle in the Wagner tetralogy “The Ring of the Nibelung”. The Newspaper carried on in more detail about the cycle “Roots and Fruits”, which was exhibited at the Achtzig Gallery for Contemporary Art in 2016:

“It was, on the one hand, the process of internal migration that accompanied my separation from my homeland, and, on the other hand, the birth of the daughter Sofija in 2005, that led me to deal with my origin, with what we inherit”, Mirjana Avramovic says in the article of “Vesti”.

The report praises Mirjana Avramovic´s artistic and scientific versatility. The newspaper emphasises that Avramovic studied landscape architecture in Belgrade and received her doctorate in Hanover; it also mentions her teaching activities at the Lucern University of Applied Sciences and Arts. On the other hand, Avramovic´s artistic training path is highlighted first with Serbian painters Ljiljana Rakic-Ristic and Milivoje Milo Dimitrijevic, and then with German-based artists Nigel Packham and Ziad El Kilani. The contact with the important German painter Ernst Marow, who additionally motivated the Artist, is also mentioned in this context. At the end of his explicitly positive report on Mirjana Avramovic´s artistic work, journalist Ranko Lukic recalls the mythological figures of the Vinca culture that are always present in Avramovic´s paintings and points to the age-old-origin of art and its immortality.
